Roleplaying 101

The secret lies in your childhood, Remember the days of make believe, cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers, even pirates and castaways! We imagined ourselves as someone else, the hero, the villain, the rescuer. You can do that still now, and hey you have more money for toys now!

Sure it's fine to toss on your cammoflage and play a scenario game, but role playing will take that game to a new level. The more people who are into character, the more the other players around them will also get into character and the better the experience for everyone involved. The bottom line is this:

Everyone is here to play the game. Nobody will make fun of you for being goofy or for looking different. The only thing you may get is a lot of people taking pictures with you or asking you how you made your costume...

That being said, let's get you into character.

Dressing the part…

Pirates listening to player briefing.

So you’re not going to take a role but your playing on the Mafia side. Why not dress the part? Its not that hard and really not expensive. Take an old white button-up shirt and a pair of black trousers, and add a pair of black and white shoes and a black tie from a local thrift store. Add a
black pin stripe suit with padded shoulders and there you are.  A "made man" from New York, ready to wheel yourself a deal, or fit someone for cement overshoes.

Your on the OSS side, WW2 Army uniforms are ideal, or take an black coat white shirt and thin tie. Top it off with a fedora hat cocked to one side a "Lucky Strike" cigarette hanging from your mouth and a toy police badge in a folder.  Now your an American undercover operative ready to save Democracy from the Axis!

With both costumes you could go further. Many Internet stores have extensive costumes and accessories. Look at toy stores for rubber knifes, cap pistols, even cheap handcuffs. However remember your playing paintball, it will get dirty so don’t spend too much.

Playing the role…

Well you arrived looking like bona fide Made Man in your costume. You open your packet to find: Hey you’re a gambler! Think what would a gambler do if s/he were there. You may become an emissary to the OSS to throw dice for props. You might go to various players and try to play three card montie. You might even be able to get into the OSS HQ to play poker. Or maybe you find your the OSS bookkeeper. Your job is to make deals with the Mafia. Act the role, but remember, never forget you’re a player. While in that HQ you may assassinate the Mafia General gaining valuable points. You may be able to gain information on the whereabouts of a important prop they have hidden. Find your General and tell him/her who you are and what your role is. S/he may have an idea or two for you already.

if you don’t want to play that role turn in your role card so it can be issued to a player who wants that role.

Pre game roleplaying...

The role-playing can start weeks or months before the game.  If you know you have a role, register on the forums here as that role's name, start your comments or your smack talk there.  Contact with other players in that role is fine, negotiate for loyalties, missions, discuss third factions.  Role-playing at the field starts one hour before the briefing and continues throughout the game.

The point of all this is just have fun with the role you’re given. Think like a kid again, blow off some steam, retreat from the real world of cell phones, projects due on Friday, or the boss who is a moron.  Run away for a few hours to 1943 where the only care you have is finding the eagle, running your missions, and the bad guys shooting at you. But......you get to shoot back too!.
